It is believed that many Hindu Gods are blue, but the fact is - there are only a few. Krishna to name one. Whiteness is considered pure, clean, good etc in the West. It is believed that these few Gods were actually Black. Etymologically speaking, the Sanskrit word ‘Krishna’ means black or dark. At times, it is also translated as “all attractive”. It is assumed that because the last few centuries have been ruled by the idea of Whiteness, that Hindu’s assimilated and the Gods were then depicted with blue skin to avoid associations with black and evil. I find this notion very concerning.

Other beliefs are that the Gods became blue to depict their journey to the Earth and this represents the power in the Earth’s skies and seas - the infinite and the immeasurable.

Black represents beauty, yet blue also represents aura. Some say that Krishna’s skin is actually his aura which transcends through his skin.
